"CBT", or Compulsory Basic Training, was introduced in December 1990. Anyone with a provisional two-wheeled licence of any kind must take this course to validate their motorcycle licence. This training course will contain all the information necessary to pass the C.B.T as easily as possible, and should take around five hours to complete provided you are up to the Roadcraft standard.
Roadcraft conducts the CBT from Tuesday to Friday from 10.00am. Once achieved, the C.B.T is valid for two years and allows any motorcycle, geared or automatic, up to 125cc to be ridden provided the rider has reached the minimum age required.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT):
Any learner riding a powered two wheeler on the road must hold a current CBT Certificate unless they are on the road-riding area of an approved CBT Course. The CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) course is a course which is run by motorcycle training bodies such as Roadcraft motorcycle training in Nottingham and approved by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Most DSA approved training bodies can hire or loan both bikes and safety equipment, e.g. helmets.
About CBT:
All learner riders must complete CBT before riding a motorbike on the roads.
CBT pass certificates issued before 1st February 2000 will be valid for three years from the date of issue. Those certificates issued from 1st February 2001 will be valid for two years.
CBT will have to be retaken if both theory and practical tests are not passed within the Certificate life.
A motorcycle CBT must be completed before riding on the road by all learners who are resident on mainland Great Britain, islands that are connected to the mainland by a road, and the following islands: Wight, North Uist, Lewis, South Uist, Harris, Benbecula, mainland Orkney and mainland Shetland. Residents of all other islands will be exempt from the need to rake CBT, but only if riding on roads which are on an exempted island.
A CBT certificate issued in respect of a course completed on a motorcycle and sidecar combination or a moped with more than two wheels will restrict the provisional riding entitlement (or full moped entitlement on full car license) to such vehicles.
Once you have successfully completed CBT and have your certificate (DL 196) you can carry on to take additional motorbike training like direct access to pass your tests and qualify for a full motorcycle or moped licence.
